Four climbers' bodies found after avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan

Rescue teams continue search for six missing climbers amid poor weather conditions

Pakistani authorities announced the discovery of the bodies of four climbers among ten who went missing after an avalanche on the summit of Broad Peak in the Karakoram range, while search operations for the remaining six continue amid adverse weather conditions.

Pakistan’s Geo News channel reported on Friday that the climbers were swept away by avalanches on the 8,051-meter-high summit, noting that search and rescue teams are continuing their operations from the mountain’s base camp.

The channel added that among the missing is Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, known as “Nimsdai,” who holds the record for the fastest ascent of all 14 eight-thousanders in the world.

For her part, the Associated Press quoted Pakistani government officials as saying that efforts to recover the bodies of the four climbers are ongoing despite the poor weather, while their identities have not yet been disclosed.

Social media platforms circulated the names of the missing individuals: Nirmal Purja, Yukta Gurung, Nima Sherpa, Gyalo Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, and Kelly Pemba Sherpa from Nepal; Sohail Sakhi from Pakistan; Mallory Geis from the United States; Nazira Al-Harthi from Oman; and Wang Zhong from China.
