Agricultural Workers: An Accessible Perspective

Agricultural Workers: An Accessible Perspective

In the fourth week of July, during Kuwait’s sweltering heat, I visited the Al-Wafra agricultural area to inspect some of its summer crops, including okra, squash, molokhia, eggplant, kale, and various leafy greens such as mint, parsley, and arugula, along with some green fodder and other minor field crops.

I also observed fruits grown in greenhouses and polytunnels, such as cucumbers, beans, and eggplants of all colors and sizes, as well as a variety of fruits, particularly figs, mangoes, and grapes. Additionally, I went to pick Kuwaiti Barhi dates, which hang from both tall and short palm trees in Kuwait’s farms. Their golden hue is unrivaled and unsurpassed by any other date variety in the entire Arab region. I also monitored farmers’ preparations in Al-Wafra for the new agricultural season, which typically begins in early September. Although I left my residence in Hadeed early in the morning, the sun’s blazing heat soon caught up with me, causing me fatigue. Strangely, however, I did not feel the harshness of the heat while touring the first farm in the Al-Wafra agricultural area, watching agricultural workers laboring in their open fields, in their plastic greenhouses (polytunnels), complexes, and farmhouses, with their heads exposed to the scorching sun.

Security news

Whoever sees agricultural workers laboring in their fields during the summer should thank God for being in an air-conditioned place during these days of relentless heat, day and night.

May God help the workers in our farms. They toil, struggle, and exert themselves during the summer so that we may enjoy seeing, and indeed eating, the produce they cultivate in winter and spring.

They deserve our assistance and our compassionate regard. We, as farm owners and lawful earners, should look upon them with kindness. For God helps a servant as long as the servant helps his brother.
