Egyptian President: Relevant authorities investigate the Damietta ships incident to ascertain its details and circumstances

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held a telephone conversation today with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, discussing the incident in which two ships at the Port of Damietta were attacked by a drone on July 29, 2026, as well as developments in regional affairs and bilateral relations between the two countries.
The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, stated that Sánchez began the call by condemning the incident on behalf of his country, reaffirming Spain’s solidarity with Egypt, both at the government and people levels.
El-Shenawy clarified that President el-Sisi noted that relevant authorities are conducting investigations to ascertain the details and circumstances of the incident, warning against the dangers of the escalation currently witnessed in the region, and stressing the necessity for Egypt, Spain, Europe, and the international community to unite in halting it.
The conversation also covered developments in regional affairs, with the Egyptian President outlining the efforts his country is making to restore stability in the region, while the Spanish Prime Minister expressed appreciation for these efforts.
Both sides emphasized the importance of a peaceful settlement of conflicts to preserve peace and security in the Middle East. Sánchez stressed the necessity for the United Nations to play its role in stopping the war, and the importance of reaching a just solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
El-Sisi also expressed Egypt’s full solidarity with Spain following recent fires in some of its regions, offering condolences to the victims and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, while reaffirming Egypt’s readiness to provide necessary support to help Spain confront the crisis’s repercussions.
The Egyptian President congratulated the Spanish Prime Minister on his country’s team winning the FIFA World Cup.
For his part, Sánchez expressed his appreciation for President el-Sisi’s initiative to call and convey the message of Egyptian support, reaffirming the deep historical relations between Egypt and Spain, and expressing his anticipation for continuing to enhance cooperation between the two countries in various political and economic fields.
