Saudi Foreign Ministry: Strikes against Iran-aligned militias in Iraq were in self-defense under international law

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condemnation of the continued attacks carried out by Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, emphasizing that these attacks came at a time when the Kingdom was making efforts to contribute to de-escalation in the region and to preserve its security and stability.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said that the Iran-aligned terrorist militias had chosen an irresponsible escalation approach that violates international law and disregards the principles of good neighborliness, following the drone attacks targeting the Kingdom over the past two days.

The ministry affirmed that the strikes conducted by the Saudi Armed Forces, in coordination with the U.S. Central Command, against specific targets within Iraqi territory, were linked to the attacks on the Kingdom’s petroleum facilities, and were carried out in accordance with the right of self-defense guaranteed under international law, as stipulated in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

The ministry stressed that the Kingdom does not seek escalation, but it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its citizens and assets if it faces any attacks.
