Kuwait Oil Company Completes First Phase of Jurassic Reservoir Development

Sources familiar with the matter told Al-Siyasa that Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has recently completed the first phase of development of unconventional Jurassic reservoirs. They noted that this exceptional achievement was crowned by the success of the test well (SA1029) located in the Sabriyah field in northern Kuwait, where the company succeeded in proving the feasibility of producing hydrocarbons from the “Kerogen” reservoir. This reservoir is considered the primary source and fundamental origin of oil and gas formation in deep Jurassic reservoirs.

The sources stated, “The success of this experiment and the ability to extract and flow hydrocarbons from this reservoir represents a strategic and historical turning point. It conclusively demonstrates the significant economic viability of the state’s efforts in exploring and developing hydrocarbon resources.”

The sources added that the Sabriyah field is classified as one of the giant fields in northern Kuwait, and the success of the test well there marks a turning point from exclusive reliance on easily extractable conventional reservoirs to opening up prospects for difficult and deep reservoirs. These reservoirs require highly advanced technologies, such as multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and long horizontal well drilling. They emphasized that Kuwait’s success in this experiment places it among technologically advanced countries in the field of exploiting oil shale and unconventional energy.

They stated that once all phases are completed, this step will secure the future of energy and strategic plans that enhance Kuwait’s capacity to increase production of associated gas and high-value light oil. This supports Petroleum Public Authority’s commitment to achieving its long-term strategic objectives and ensures domestic energy needs for electricity generation plants and major industrial projects.
