The Spanish Ambassador to Kuwait, Manuel Hernández Camayo, affirmed that the crowning of his national team as World Cup champions would mark a new launchpad for strengthening sports cooperation between Kuwait and Spain. He pointed to promising opportunities to expand partnerships between the sports institutions of the two countries, including signing formal agreements, attracting the Spanish La Liga, and organizing events and matches for Spanish clubs in Kuwait.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a party held by the embassy at its residence to celebrate Spain’s title victory, attended by the Deputy Minister of Defense, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Mishaal Al-Sabah, and a gathering of ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the country, the ambassador stated that this sporting achievement was an occasion to celebrate with friends and football fans in Kuwait. He expressed his happiness at the large turnout that shared the embassy’s joy in the triumph.

Coverage of the National Assembly

He added that since his arrival in Kuwait, he has felt as if he were in his own home. He explained that the tournament had reinforced this feeling, as he had witnessed the widespread popularity of Spanish football and the Spanish national team among citizens and residents. He confirmed that large numbers of fans were keen on following the national team’s matches throughout the tournament and continued to support them until they secured the title.

He said, “I can only say thank you to them. It was a wonderful scene that reflected the deep love for Spanish football,” expressing his gratitude to everyone who shared the embassy’s celebration of this achievement.

Hernández Camayo clarified that Kuwait already possesses a solid foundation for sports cooperation with Spain, given the presence of football academies operating according to the Spanish methodology under the supervision of Spanish coaches, alongside the participation of several Spanish players in local competitions. This constitutes a suitable ground for developing sports relations between the two countries.

He pointed to the opportunity to push forward the signing of formal cooperation agreements between Kuwaiti and Spanish sports authorities, as well as encouraging partnerships with the private sector. He highlighted the possibility of attracting the Spanish La Liga to Kuwait and organizing sporting events or hosting matches for Spanish clubs in the future.

The Spanish ambassador concluded his remarks by revealing that he had already received a number of ideas and proposals in this regard, expressing his optimism that the coming phase would witness “pleasant surprises” that would contribute to enhancing sports cooperation between Kuwait and Spain, and elevate bilateral relations to broader levels in this field.
