Syrian President and Guterres discuss enhancing cooperation in humanitarian and development fields

Guterres: The United Nations stands with Syria, and I call on the world to support its people

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa held talks today, Saturday, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on ways to enhance cooperation between Syria and the UN in humanitarian and developmental fields, as well as supporting early recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the meeting took place in Damascus, marking the first visit by a UN Secretary-General to Syria since 2009. The two sides also discussed the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

For his part, Guterres affirmed that the United Nations stands with Syria, describing his visit to Damascus as a “solidarity visit” and calling on the international community to intensify its support for the Syrian people at this critical stage.

Guterres said in a post on the X platform: “I have just arrived in Damascus on a solidarity visit.. My message is clear: The United Nations stands with Syria at this pivotal moment,” adding, “I urge the international community to spare no effort in supporting the Syrian people and backing recovery and stability efforts.”
