Archive for Preserving Heritage at the Saudi Cultural Memory Center
In a new procedural step, the Saudi Cabinet approved the transformation of the organizational unit within the Ministry of Culture known as the “Cultural Archive” into a non-independent center named the “Saudi Cultural Memory Center.”
Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan affirmed that the project “represents a qualitative leap in the trajectory of the Saudi Cultural Memory Center, establishing it as a national reference for cultural heritage and the authority responsible for regulating the sector of inventory, documentation, and digital archiving, as well as developing national policies and standards. It aims to empower relevant entities to preserve and document cultural memory within a unified framework, in alignment with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes attention to culture and the arts.”
He noted that the center will work to “regulate the sector of inventory, documentation, and digital archiving, build capacities, and ensure the sustainability of preservation and digital accessibility. Additionally, it will link the center and its services with relevant entities within the Kingdom’s cultural heritage ecosystem, ensuring the highest level of protection for the Kingdom’s cultural heritage in the long term.”

The center will oversee inventory, documentation, and digital archiving, manage the unified national platform for cultural memory, develop digital preservation infrastructure, and build national capacities in documentation fields. It will also enhance public awareness of the value of cultural heritage.
Furthermore, it will work to inventory and consolidate cultural data under a single national umbrella, establish unified standards, and enable specialists to access this reliable heritage information.
The establishment of the center is part of the Ministry of Culture’s efforts to develop the cultural sector and preserve and safeguard cultural heritage. This is achieved by developing innovative national models for preserving and showcasing cultural content, diversifying and enhancing the integration of national memory sources, and encouraging community participation in these efforts. All of this is supported by an advanced technological system designed to preserve Saudi cultural heritage under the umbrella of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
The center also aims to build an advanced technological system that preserves cultural heritage and makes it accessible, thereby supporting the achievement of the objectives of the National Culture Strategy under the umbrella of Vision 2030.
