The Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Directorate for the Suppression of Narcotics, announced on Monday the thwarting of an attempt to smuggle drugs into the country via an international postal parcel.
In a statement, the Ministry said the operation led to the arrest of suspects of Sri Lankan nationality and the seizure of narcotics intended for trafficking, as part of the continuous efforts undertaken by the Criminal Security Sector to combat the smuggling and distribution of narcotic substances.
It clarified that, in coordination with the General Customs Authority, inspection and examination efforts resulted in the discovery of 210 A4-sized sheets saturated with narcotics, despite their camouflage as instructional booklets and their concealment inside 10 electric light bulbs.
Following the completion of procedures, the parcel recipient was arrested. Upon questioning, he admitted that he was preparing to hand over the parcel to the second suspect. Additionally, 10 grams of methamphetamine (shabu) and a sensitive scale were found in their possession. The suspects and seized items were referred to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal actions against them.
The Ministry reaffirmed its continued deployment of proactive strikes against drug smugglers and distributors, and its firm stance against any attempts to introduce these toxins into the country, emphasizing that it remains vigilant against anyone who dares to undermine societal security.
