International Maritime Organization: Strait of Hormuz remains highly dangerous for commercial vessels
The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remains a highly dangerous area for commercial vessels, noting that approximately 6,000 sailors remain stranded in the strait.
Bloomberg quoted Dominguez as saying that the organization supports voluntary measures aimed at enhancing navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz amid the security tensions gripping the region.
He clarified that there is no international legal basis for imposing fees or mandatory payments for transit through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international law in managing navigation.
He added, “I will reiterate the necessity of complying with international law, and that countries should follow the organization’s lead, and that companies should, at this stage, especially given this volatility, avoid risking transit through the Strait of Hormuz.”
