Harming a Muslim has severe consequences
I fully believe in the truth of the following verse: “The believers are but brothers” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 10), especially as it applies completely to everything a Muslim individual says and does in this worldly life. I believe that the worst sin a person can commit in today’s turbulent world, much of which is being driven by the Muslim ummah, is deliberately harming a fellow Muslim for purely selfish reasons.
Among the consequences of a Muslim harming another Muslim are the following:
- Weakening of the Muslim Ummah: When a Muslim deliberately harms a fellow believer, it inevitably produces repercussions that extend beyond the immediate environment of both the perpetrator and the victim. Just imagine a single family members turning against each other for purely narcissistic reasons, and how their enemies would view them as they tear each other apart. Would not this confused group, acting out their own free will to fulfill their enemies’ desires against them, be seen as weak and vulnerable?
- “At Allah, the disputants will be assembled”: Whoever targets a fellow Muslim with harmful words or actions will meet him before the Lord of Majesty on the Day of Resurrection. What will be the stance of the intentional offender then, and what will his excuse be? What will pass through his mind when his soul reaches his throat at the moment of death, knowing that his evil deed will precede him and that he will face recompense for what he committed against his fellow Muslim.
- Absence of blessing and loss of peace: Whoever resolves and insists on harming a fellow Muslim merely because he has the ability to do so, will find the blessing of wealth and life removed from him. His children may even show him the utmost disobedience, and he will lose any sense of inner peace. Whoever willingly violates the principle of doing good to another Muslim and replaces it with harm will surely reap what he has sown, either in this world or in the Hereafter.
- Hardness and blackening of the heart: Whoever accustoms himself to harming a fellow Muslim is dominated by his evil-urging self, and Satan mounts upon him. Whoever allows Satan to ride upon him will inevitably experience a hardened and blackened heart. Whoever does not show mercy to a fellow Muslim will have mercy erased from his heart until he meets his Lord, Exalted and Majestic. So do not harm your fellow Muslim, lest your hands be ruined.
