Hamad... The Commander Who Saw Tomorrow
Men leave their homelands more beautiful than they found them. Great figures depart, but their legacy remains alive in the memories of peoples and in the contours of the nations they helped build.
Since personal conduct often reveals a man’s true character, I still recall our first meeting, when His Highness was Crown Prince, with a delegation from the Association of Families of Prisoners and Missing Persons. He responded without hesitation, making persistent efforts through his calls and connections to achieve effective solutions, including contacting the Iraqi side to pressure the former regime.
Our second encounter with His Highness was personal, in London in 2001. I met him at a café on Oxford Street; after shaking his hand and greeting him, I asked him to walk with me for nearly an hour. During our conversation, he shared his aspirations for Qatar’s future, confidently outlining his initial preparations for the country’s future and sketching out an ambitious project that exceeded expectations. At the same time, he expressed his deep appreciation for the State of Kuwait, both its leadership and its people, reflecting the profound fraternal ties that have united the two countries over the decades.
Fate willed that our paths cross again years later, at the 2012 Asian Games. His Highness greeted me with his familiar smile and recalled our old conversation in full detail, asking in a phrase that remains vivid in my memory: “How do you see my promise to you now?” At that moment, I realized that great men do not make promises for media consumption; rather, they treat them as commitments they honor, and visions they translate into reality. He spoke and fulfilled, pledged and delivered, foresaw and achieved. He then departed, leaving behind a homeland that is more present and confident, and a developmental experience that has earned widespread appreciation and respect.
May God have mercy on the late Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and reward him abundantly for what he contributed to his nation and his ummah. May He grant his noble family and the fraternal Qatari people beautiful patience and excellent consolation. We ask God to protect the State of Qatar, to grant Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, his brothers, and all the people of Qatar success in continuing the path of construction and prosperity, to perpetuate upon it the blessings of security and stability, and to increase its elevation, progress, and affluence, so that it remains a model of ambition and achievement, continuing the legacy of a leader who believed in his homeland, and whose homeland believed in him, and who inscribed his name in the annals of men who leave their homelands more beautiful than they found them.
