Sudden death of South African player Jayden Adams days after his participation in the World Cup

Grief has enveloped the football community in South Africa following the sudden death of Mamelodi Sundowns and national team midfielder Jayden Adams, aged 25, just days after his participation with his national team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South African Players’ Union (SAPU) mourned the player in a statement on the X platform, expressing deep sorrow over his untimely death. As of now, Mamelodi Sundowns has not issued an official statement, and the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Former South Africa national team captain Doctor Khumalo revealed that Adams had learned of his grandmother’s death just hours before facing the Czech Republic in the group stage, yet he continued to play for the national team.

Adams participated with South Africa in the 2026 World Cup finals, helping his team reach the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Canada with a 1-0 defeat.
