The Kuwait Heritage Association honored his life and achievements
Saleh Al-Musbah, a member of the board of directors of the Kuwait Heritage Association, delivered a lecture titled “Saleh Al-Musbah... A Life, Contributions, and Achievements” at the association’s headquarters. The event was moderated by Jumanah Bahbahani, the association’s secretary general, who began the session by introducing Al-Musbah and outlining the key milestones of his professional and cultural career, alongside his numerous contributions to serving Kuwaiti heritage, cultural work, and volunteerism, as well as the accomplishments that left a clear mark in various fields he worked in.
The lecture witnessed active engagement from the audience, who learned about aspects of Al-Musbah’s eventful career filled with contributions and achievements, including experiences and expertise that helped enrich the cultural and heritage landscape in Kuwait.
During the lecture, Al-Musbah highlighted the key milestones of his cultural and intellectual journey, emphasizing that his relationship with books began early, specifically in 1975, when he used to visit the Islamic Book Fair held during the month of Ramadan, followed by the Arab Book Fair, which helped nurture his passion.
He explained that his first cultural steps began during his secondary school years when he published a school newsletter titled “Lines and Pens.” This interest was further strengthened during his studies at the Teachers Institute, which played a major role in expanding his interest in books and libraries, through which he met many writers, poets, and intellectuals.
Subsequently, he entered the University of Kuwait in 1981, enrolling in the Faculty of Education, majoring in Arabic Language. At the time, he was a university student from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and then worked as a teacher in the evening session from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Al-Masbah noted that his private library has experienced continuous growth over decades, now comprising approximately 150,000 books, 50,000 magazines, more than 10,000 copies of Kuwaiti newspapers, 23,000 video tapes documenting various aspects of Kuwait’s history and that of other countries, and over 10,000 valuable photographic images of documentary and heritage significance.
He added that the large volume of collections and surplus books forced him to distribute them across several storage facilities, expressing his hope that a project to establish a major library under the supervision of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters or another official entity would be adopted, thereby ensuring the preservation of this cultural and intellectual heritage and making it accessible to researchers and enthusiasts.
Al-Masbah also highlighted his most prominent publications and documentary projects, noting that he authored and co-authored several specialized books, including *Kuwaiti Hajj Campaigns Throughout History*, and the *Encyclopedia of Kuwaiti Journalism*, in collaboration with Fahd Al-Abduljalil, president of the association, and researcher Nida Al-Rifai, as well as the book *Fifty Years at the Government Press and the Official Kuwaiti Newspaper*, published in 2024.
He further clarified that he contributed to reviewing and editing approximately 25 books in various historical and cultural fields, emphasizing that documentation represents a cultural and national mission he is keen to continue in service of Kuwait and its future generations.
Fahd Al-Abduljalil, president of the association, praised Al-Masbah’s rich cultural and heritage journey, affirming that he possesses a distinguished and extensive experience. Al-Abduljalil stated that Al-Masbah deserves the State Appreciation Award for his documentary publications, research, and cultural contributions both within and outside Kuwait, as well as his efforts in collecting and preserving historical and cultural sources and references.
He added that Al-Masbah’s library and collections constitute an important intellectual and documentary treasure, encompassing thousands of books, magazines, newspapers, and archival materials that serve as a valuable reference for researchers and scholars from within Kuwait and abroad, underscoring that these efforts reflect his dedication to serving local culture.
For his part, Talal Al-Rumaihi, former president of the Writers Association, affirmed that Saleh Al-Masbah is among the cultural figures who support researchers and those interested in documentation and heritage, noting his consistent commitment to providing scientific and intellectual support to anyone requiring sources or information to serve their research and studies.
Al-Rumaidi added that the swimmer has made prominent contributions to volunteer work, noting that he served as a board member of the Writers’ Association since 2010, before assuming the post of General Secretary of the Association in 2012, where his continuous efforts in serving cultural and literary work were closely observed. He pointed out that Al-Masbah has an active presence in delivering lectures and cultural seminars, making him one of the well-known names in this field.
The lecture was accompanied by a documentary film by Hani Al-Asousi, a member of the board of directors of the association. The film covered the first Arab School Games hosted by Al-Shuwaikh Secondary School in 1963. It highlighted the session held in the presence of the then-Crown Prince, the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, may God have mercy on him, along with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and representatives from several participating sister Arab states. The film shed light on the organizational and sporting atmosphere surrounding the event.
