(Royters) – After months of imposing a continuous naval blockade on Iran, the U.S. military has decided to form a task force to bolster Washington’s efforts to restrict Tehran’s transfer of advanced weapons systems and other sanctioned materials across its land borders and through the Caspian Sea.

According to a statement reviewed by Reuters before its publication, U.S. Central Command will announce the formation of the task force, which had not been previously reported, later on Saturday.

The task force, named “Iron Gate,” will be headquartered in Tampa, Florida, and will coordinate its operations with other U.S. government agencies. In addition to weapons transfers, the task force will also focus on dual-use materials and sources of illicit income.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, said in a statement, “Enhancing Central Command’s cooperation with partners across U.S. agencies will further limit Iran’s ability to fund terrorism, rebuild weapons factories, and restore its military capabilities.”

U.S. Central Command estimated that the naval blockade imposed on Iran has prevented it from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil.
