The media authorities in Gaza (the Government Media Office) announced on Saturday that approximately 70,000 tents sheltering displaced persons have been flooded due to a weather depression whose effects began impacting the Strip over the past 12 hours.
In a press statement, the authorities said that the flooding of the tents has damaged thousands of displaced families and caused the collapse of dozens of walls, resulting in injuries of varying severity, including serious cases, across different governorates of the Strip.
It added that initial estimates of direct material losses caused by the weather depression reached around $3 million, while warning of the risks of the collapse of dozens of cracked and dilapidated buildings damaged by previous Israeli bombardment.
The statement noted that the worsening humanitarian situation is due to the continued closure of crossing points and the prohibition of importing essential shelter and reconstruction materials needed to protect displaced persons and mitigate the impacts of the weather depression.
Relief teams and local bodies had previously warned of a humanitarian disaster with the onset of winter.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reported that approximately 1.98 million people in the Gaza Strip, representing 94 percent of the population, are in urgent need of shelter assistance, with 58 percent facing critical or catastrophic needs.
