German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Muslim immigrants who refuse to acknowledge Germany’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust to leave the country.

Speaking at a reception for Jewish athletes in Berlin on Friday, Merz said, “Germany’s historical responsibility applies equally to those arriving from Islamic countries.”

He added, “Anyone who does not accept this historical responsibility must leave Germany.”

Merz was hosting participants in the Maccabiah Games, an international sporting event featuring Jewish athletes that is held every four years in Israel.

A basketball coach informed Merz that athletes fear being attacked if they wear the red training jackets of the Maccabi team, which bear the Star of David, in German streets.

In response, Merz quoted former German President Richard von Weizsäcker’s address to the Bundestag in 1985, marking the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II. Reflecting on Nazi crimes and Germany’s responsibility for the systematic murder of millions of Jews, von Weizsäcker stated, “The youth are not guilty of what happened then. But they are responsible for how these events are interpreted in the pages of history.” Merz affirmed that he considers those words immutable and beyond change.
