North Korea conducted tests on strategic cruise missiles, according to the official news agency, on Tuesday, just days after carrying out similar tests using cluster munitions.
The test, held on Monday, “enhanced the ability to deliver a vertical strike on the target by improving maneuverability in the final phase of the cruise missile’s trajectory,” the Korean Central News Agency reported.
The agency added: “The medium-sized warhead, mounted on the missile, is capable of turning an area ranging from five to six hectares into ash when used at its maximum destructive capacity.”
A North Korean official stated that the test was conducted “because our armed forces must defend the country’s security and deter all types of threats,” as reported by Agence France-Presse.
Unlike ballistic missile tests, cruise missile tests are not subject to sanctions.
South Korea, the neighboring country, did not announce the drills conducted by North Korea on Sunday and Monday.
Jang Do-young, spokesperson for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, told journalists on Monday that “the decision to announce or not announce an event depends on a precise military assessment, taking into account the protection of surveillance and reconnaissance assets, operational security, and other factors.”
He added: “Our military does not announce every launch conducted by North Korea.”
