(KUNA) – The Arab League renewed its call on the United Kingdom and the international community to intensify pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to halt their violations and crimes against the Palestinian people and to advance the implementation of the two-state solution, realizing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This came in a statement issued on Monday marking the 109th anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration, which consisted of a letter sent by then-British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild on November 2, 1917, in which he announced the British government’s support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.
The League stated that the British declaration at the time constituted a pivotal milestone in the historical trajectory that led to the Nakba (catastrophe) of the Palestinian people, their displacement, and the denial of their legitimate national rights, as well as the continuation of violations against them to this day.
It proudly recalled the sacrifices of the Palestinian people, their resilience, and their steadfastness in defending their land and their inalienable rights, foremost among which is the right to self-determination, the end of the Israeli occupation, and the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The League welcomed the steps taken by the British government, including recognizing the State of Palestine, imposing sanctions on Israeli officials for incitement to violence against Palestinians, and announcing a decision to ban the import of products from settlements established on occupied Palestinian land.
It regarded these steps as positive developments in the right direction toward rectifying the historical injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people, emphasizing the importance of completing the necessary measures to implement them.
