Instagram is moving to expand its visual content by testing a new feature that allows the posting of videos up to 90 minutes long, a move aimed at attracting podcast creators and long-form content producers and strengthening competition with video platforms.
The tech site TechCrunch reported that the test has begun with a select group of content creators in the United States, allowing them to publish long videos and link them to short “Reels,” enabling users to transition from a promotional clip to watching the full content.
The feature, called “Features,” targets podcast hosts, comedians, and other content creators, allowing users to watch a short excerpt from a podcast episode or video and then tap it to continue watching the full work.
Tessa Lyons, Vice President of Product at Instagram, stated that the feature enables users to move from watching a short clip to following the associated full video, while content creators will be able to link their Reels to their longer video works.
The app began testing the feature with a number of content creators in Brazil before expanding the trial to tens of thousands of creators in the United States. Long videos will appear in user recommendations on the Explore page and other sections of the app.
Long videos are expected to be available on mobile devices, with Instagram planning to bring the viewing experience to its dedicated TV app, which supports Samsung, Fire TV, and Google TV devices, as well as Apple TV in the United States.
This step is part of Instagram’s efforts to expand the types of content available on its platform, moving beyond short-form videos and attracting an audience interested in following shows, podcasts, and long-form visual content.
