An Iraqi court on Thursday reduced the life sentences of three French nationals to 20 years in prison, convicting them of belonging to the “Daesh” (ISIS) organization in Syria and Iraq.

According to the ruling by the judge of Baghdad’s Karrah Third Criminal Court, the judgment covered Amir Abdul-Qader, known as “Abu Bara al-Fransi,” born in 1989 in Lille, France, of Algerian origin; Kamal Habib Ahmad, 42, a French national of Tunisian origin known as “Abu Sumayya al-Muhajir”; and Charlie Saint-Rémy, 32, a French national of Vietnamese origin born in Paris and known as “Abu Sufyan.”

On Tuesday, the Karrah Third Criminal Court had sentenced six other French nationals affiliated with “Daesh” to 20 years in prison, with one receiving a 15-year sentence.

The court also heard testimonies from defendants Ibrahim al-Khalil, Nour al-Din Abdul-Qader al-Mansouri, and Majid Fatemi Abdul-Qader, regarding their affiliation with “Daesh” and the roles and positions assigned to them during their time with the organization in Syria.

The court set November 18 as the date for sentencing the three defendants (two holding French nationality and one holding Moroccan nationality).

Since September 20, the court has been trying 47 “Daesh” members holding French nationality, according to a schedule set by the court.

The court appointed Iraqi lawyers to defend the defendants after French lawyers, requested by the accused, were unable to arrive.
