Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Thursday that the Russian capital and its surrounding areas were targeted by an aerial attack involving more than 600 drones overnight, confirming that Russian air defense systems had shot down most of them.
The Russian news agency TASS reported, citing Russian media sources, that this attack was among the largest and broadest drone assaults targeting the Russian capital since the beginning of the year.
In a post on the Russian social media platform Max, Sobyanin stated that the drones headed toward the Moscow region between 8:30 p.m. yesterday and 7:00 a.m. today, noting that the majority were neutralized by the Russian Ministry of Defense’s air defense forces at long distances from the capital.
He added that 231 drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow, according to TASS.
In a related development, Russian media reported that temporary restrictions were imposed on air traffic at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports overnight before being lifted before 7:00 a.m. local time.
These developments come amid ongoing reciprocal drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine. Media reports today indicated that a Russian strike targeted the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, damaging an educational facility, according to the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov.
