Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi donated $10 million from his personal account on Wednesday to support the Umayyad Mosque and the shrine of Sayyida Zainab in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The donation followed a visit by Al-Zaidi to the Umayyad Mosque and the shrine of Sayyida Zainab, accompanied by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani, according to two statements issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office.
The office clarified in a statement that Al-Zaidi visited the shrine of Sayyida Zainab, performed prayers inside the shrine’s courtyard, and then toured its landmarks.
It added that the Prime Minister donated $10 million from his personal account, with $5 million allocated to meet the shrine’s needs and an equal amount for the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
Earlier, Al-Zaidi visited the Umayyad Mosque accompanied by Al-Shibani, performed prayers in its precincts, and then toured its historical landmarks, according to a previous statement from his media office.
The statement noted that Al-Zaidi wrote a message in the visitors’ logbook at the Dome of the Treasury, located in the mosque’s courtyard.
The media office also announced at that time that Al-Zaidi had donated an unspecified amount from his personal account to help meet the mosque’s needs, before a subsequent statement revealed the amount to be $5 million.
Earlier on Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa received Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Zaidi and his accompanying delegation at Damascus International Airport, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
This marks Al-Zaidi’s first official visit to Syria since assuming office in mid-May.
Al-Sharaa and Al-Zaidi had previously met in New York in September on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, with Al-Shibani in attendance.
The meeting then focused on ways to enhance political and security coordination, expand economic and trade cooperation, and address issues of mutual interest, according to SANA.
Al-Zaidi’s arrival in Damascus followed an official visit to Jordan on Monday, during which he met with King Abdullah II and discussed enhancing economic, trade, and investment cooperation, as well as developing joint projects.
