The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, discussed during a phone call “efforts to contain the current crisis.”
A statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the two sides discussed efforts “to prevent escalation, the likelihood of which has increased in recent periods, and to promote political and peaceful solutions through dialogue.”
The statement added that the two ministers agreed “to continue consultations and close coordination at the bilateral level and within the framework of the Quadrilateral Ministerial Mechanism, which includes Turkey and Pakistan alongside the two countries.”
On Monday, the Egyptian Parliament approved empowering President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to take “the necessary measures” to support Saudi Arabia in defending its security, amid escalating hostilities between the kingdom and the Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen.
