The Jordanian and Syrian foreign ministries said in a joint statement that the two countries agreed to form a joint security committee to examine all details and facts regarding the Jordanian airstrikes that targeted Islamic State positions in Syria.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi informed his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shibani, that Tuesday’s attacks were based on field intelligence and aimed at neutralizing confirmed threats and imminent terrorist operations targeting Jordan’s security.
Safadi expressed “deep regret and sorrow” over the civilian casualties during the operations.
Both sides affirmed the deep, distinctive historical brotherly relations between the two countries and their peoples, and their shared commitment to strengthening and developing these ties across various fields, and to overcoming any issues that could strain them through frank and responsible brotherly dialogue, based on the firm conviction that the security of both countries is interconnected and that they share a common destiny.
In a related development, the Syrian state news agency, SANA, announced that the movement of passengers and commercial cargo would return to normal through the Nussaybin border crossing with Jordan starting Wednesday morning, following a brief closure of the crossing.
