Russia and Ukraine announced on Tuesday that they had begun a limited ceasefire to allow a humanitarian operation in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said via the Telegram app that it had halted shelling toward the Ukrainian city of Kherson starting at 4 a.m. Moscow time, in preparation for the humanitarian operation in Oleshky, which is located on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River from Kherson.

Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights, confirmed in a Facebook post that the ceasefire had begun at the same time. He said, “As head of the Ukrainian negotiating team, I confirm that the Ukrainian side is honoring its commitments.”

The White House announced last week that the two sides had agreed, with the mediation of First Lady Melania Trump, to a temporary ceasefire in the city to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians through a safe corridor.

The White House clarified that the agreement called for a temporary halt to military operations in the city to enable the entry of humanitarian aid and preparations for the evacuation of residents wishing to leave, without specifying the duration of the truce.
