Minister of Public Works, Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, laid the foundation stone for the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment Plant project, in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait, Yao Qin.
Al-Mashaan stated that the project embodies the depth of relations, friendship, and cooperation between Kuwait and China. She explained that the project is implemented in accordance with the directives of the political leadership, which prioritizes and supports infrastructure and sustainable development projects, in pursuit of the aspirations of the nation’s people for a better future.
She noted that the study, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment Plant and its complementary works constitute one of the major strategic projects undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works. The aim is to develop Kuwait’s wastewater system in line with the national development plan and to enhance environmental sustainability. The project covers an area of approximately 2.8 million square meters.
Al-Mashaan clarified that the project is not limited to the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, but includes an integrated system of facilities and infrastructure. The centerpiece is the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment Plant, with an operational capacity of 500,000 cubic meters per day, with the potential for future expansion to reach a capacity of one million cubic meters per day.
She mentioned that the project includes the construction of pumping stations in several areas, such as Al-Shadadiya, Al-Jahra, and Mushrif, as well as networks of pipelines. It also features deep injection networks with diameters reaching up to three meters, which are the first of their kind in Kuwait, in addition to storage tanks with a total capacity of 600,000 cubic meters.
The project also includes the construction of a central incinerator for disposing of pollutants resulting from treatment processes, alongside a renewable energy system relying on solar power and biogas, aimed at covering 50% of the project’s energy needs.
She highlighted that the project’s significance lies in developing wastewater infrastructure and enhancing the utilization of treated wastewater for irrigation and afforestation. This contributes to rationalizing water consumption, preserving natural resources, protecting the environment, and combating desertification. She emphasized that the project represents a crucial step toward developing modern and sustainable infrastructure that meets the country’s current and future needs and supports its journey toward sustainable development.
For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait, Yao Qin, expressed his pleasure at participating in the foundation-laying ceremony for the North Kabd Wastewater Treatment Plant project, which represents another significant milestone in the project’s implementation.
