The Korean Central News Agency reported on Saturday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for transforming the country’s army units into elite, self-sufficient combat forces, during a two-day meeting of unit commanders in Pyongyang.
The event underscored the consistent priority of Kim’s policy, which focuses on strengthening military capabilities.
In a speech delivered at the conference of North Korean People’s Army unit commanders held on October 22 and 23, which the Korean Central News Agency described as the first comprehensive military gathering since the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in February, Kim urged every unit to be fully prepared to achieve the “goal of military enhancement in the new era.”
Kim stated, “Let us build the strongest army and accelerate the pace of our military revolution.”
At the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, held in February and which sets the country’s course for the next five years, Kim called for strengthening the conventional armed forces and reaffirmed efforts to develop nuclear weapons and missiles.
