(KUNA) — The European Commission announced on Friday the allocation of an additional 22.5 million euros (approximately 25.2 million dollars) to support humanitarian efforts in Yemen amid renewed military escalation and worsening living conditions for millions of residents. This brings the total European humanitarian aid allocated to Yemen in 2026 to 110 million euros (approximately 123.3 million dollars).
In a statement, the Commission said the additional funding responds to the rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation caused by ongoing military operations, rising numbers of displaced persons, disruption of essential services, and difficulties in delivering aid to affected populations.
It noted that military escalation in recent weeks has led to the displacement of around 230,000 people, while millions of Yemenis continue to suffer from acute food insecurity, malnutrition, and reduced access to healthcare and safe drinking water.
The Commission explained that European aid focuses on meeting urgent humanitarian needs in the sectors of food security, nutrition, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, while also providing protection for the most vulnerable groups, particularly displaced families, women, and children.
The European Commission emphasized that the new funding will help strengthen the operational capacities of humanitarian partners, pre-position essential supplies, and enhance readiness to address any further deterioration in the humanitarian situation.
It also reaffirmed the European Union’s continued commitment to delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need across Yemen, despite security challenges and restrictions that hinder the access of relief teams to affected areas.
