The University of Florida’s Institute of Art and Design in the United States is preparing to introduce a manned electric aircraft into its campus police operations, a move it claims is the first of its kind in the country, aimed at enhancing security patrols and accelerating emergency response, subject to approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
The university police plan to use the aircraft, named “Astro” and belonging to the “Jetson One” model, to monitor the campus and surrounding areas, reach locations inaccessible to traditional vehicles, assess storm-related damage, and transport essential supplies.
Aaron Murray, the police chief, stated that the university seeks to explore the potential of emerging aviation technologies and leverage them to enhance public safety. It also plans to collaborate with regional law enforcement agencies to expand the aircraft’s use.
