Prince Harry said he hopes to reconcile with his father, King Charles of the United Kingdom, and other members of his family with whom he has been estranged since moving to the United States six years ago.
Harry, 42 and the king’s younger son, caused a major rift within the family when he and his wife, Meghan, stepped back from their royal duties and relocated in 2020 to California, where they issued sharp criticisms of the royal institution.
Harry has rarely spoken with his elder brother, Crown Prince Prince William, over the years, and his family had not reunited with their father until recently. In an interview with GQ magazine, Harry said he wants to mend relations. He recently returned to the United Kingdom accompanied by Meghan and their two children.
Harry told the magazine, “With everything going on in the world, reconciliation is the most important thing to me.”
He noted that he understands the intense public interest in his family’s situation.
He added, “There are sibling rifts, and there are broken relationships between children and their parents, or between children and one parent.” He explained, “Reconciliation efforts can inspire some people to improve their own relationships.”
He continued, “There are those who do not want this reconciliation to succeed. I, however, want it to succeed.”
Harry’s spokesperson said his latest comments were not intended to criticize William or any other family member.
Concluding his interview with GQ, the Duke of Sussex said that although “the scars remain forever,” he wants to encourage everyone to let go of the past.
He added, “For me, there is enough tragedy in the world and in people’s lives, and there is no need to continue family feuds. It’s not worth it.”
