Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with Al-Iraqiya News Channel that Tehran had not received a response from Saudi Arabia or the Houthi rebels in Yemen to its offer to mediate talks aimed at ending the fighting between them.
Araghchi first proposed this initiative earlier this month, as the Iran-aligned Houthis intensified their attacks on the kingdom.
During the interview, Araghchi also addressed the possibility of Egypt joining Saudi Arabia in the war against the Houthis. He stated, “Any external intervention would complicate matters,” adding that Cairo had previously informed Tehran it would not intervene “directly” in the Yemeni conflict.
Egypt has said it is ready to provide Saudi Arabia with the support it needs to defend its security, a move that could escalate tensions in the Middle East.
A parliamentary vote on a potential deployment of the Egyptian military against the Houthis has been postponed to October 26.
