U.S. President Donald Trump said that Washington wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reach an agreement, stressing that the Ukrainian people can no longer endure the current situation as the war drags on.
Trump told reporters, “He can make a deal, as he could have two years ago, when we had our brief conversation in the Oval Office. That meeting, now a well-known and widely discussed one, involved JD Vance, myself, and others, along with Zelenskyy.”
Trump clarified, “He could have secured a good deal then; in fact, he might have been able to obtain a much better deal than he can now.”
Trump emphasized, “Zelenskyy must be willing to strike a deal, because I don’t believe his people will accept this situation for much longer, and I think the agreement can be reached in a different way.”
He added, “I don’t care how it’s done. I don’t want to receive a report with figures like 25,000 killed, or 34,000 four months ago. I don’t want to hear that soldiers are being killed daily.”
Trump’s remarks come as diplomatic talks on Ukraine took place in Oslo, the capital of Norway, bringing together Zelenskyy, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, and European leaders.
Trump had previously stated that it was time for Ukraine to “choose someone else to negotiate” instead of Zelenskyy, noting that the latter had missed an opportunity to end the crisis and had not contributed sufficiently to resolving the problem.
