Cairo Misdemeanor Court sentences defendants accused of impersonating judicial officials and defrauding citizens

A Cairo misdemeanor court sentenced the defendant, widely known in the media as the “fake judge,” to 10 years in prison for charges of impersonating a judicial official and two fraud cases.

The court sentenced the defendant, Mustafa Kamal, to five years in prison for impersonating a judicial official and filming video clips inside a courthouse, as well as two and three years for the two fraud cases. The court also sentenced the second, third, and fourth defendants—Sabir S., Ahmed A., and Bilal S.—to three years in prison each.

The Public Prosecution’s Media Center had previously noted the circulation of a video on social media platforms, in which a citizen pleaded for help, claiming he had been defrauded and had his money stolen after an individual falsely claimed to be a judge at a judicial authority.

The Public Prosecution launched an investigation, which led to identifying and arresting the first defendant. Authorities found a firearm, ammunition, a judicial sash, identification cards bearing his alleged title, and two mobile phones in his possession.

During interrogation, the defendant admitted to impersonating a judge and committing fraud against citizens, stealing their money under the false pretense that he could expedite the allocation of residential units to them.

He also admitted to filming and publishing photos and video clips inside a courthouse while wearing the judicial sash, in an effort to lend credibility to his claims. He implicated a second defendant in the crimes and alleged that some court staff assisted him.

Several court employees were also arrested and questioned. They acknowledged appearing in the videos under investigation but denied the accusations against them, insisting that the first defendant had told them he worked for a judicial authority.
