The UK Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday that it would deploy Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to carry out defensive missions against Houthi attacks on the kingdom’s cities and critical infrastructure.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the operation will include Typhoon fighter jets, along with an A400M Atlas military transport aircraft.
In a written statement submitted to the British Parliament, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said that Royal Air Force Typhoon jets would conduct air defense operations over Saudi Arabia to help protect Saudi cities, civilian populations, and vital national infrastructure from Houthi attacks.
He added that the aircraft would operate under defensive missions and would not carry out offensive strikes against the Houthis.
Streeting further stated: “We unequivocally condemn Houthi attacks and fully support the right of Saudi Arabia and the legitimate Yemeni government to defend themselves.”
He emphasized that the UK cannot allow international maritime navigation to be threatened or held hostage in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait.
The UK Defence Secretary clarified that the deployment of these forces is part of efforts to support conditions conducive to reaching a political settlement of the conflict.
The UK Defence Secretary also announced the extension of the stay of a Voyager aerial refueling aircraft in Saudi Arabia by an additional 90 days.
