In fulfillment of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif’s historic and religious responsibility regarding the issues of the Arab and Islamic nations, and in light of the bloody conflicts and disputes currently afflicting the region, which have shaken the security of homelands and destabilized the entire region, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, is issuing an urgent fraternal appeal to all brothers and sisters across all Arab and Islamic countries. He calls for prioritizing the spirit of brotherhood and the bonds of religion, blood, and language; elevating the voice of wisdom; resorting to the language of reason and dialogue; and immediately and comprehensively halting all acts of war, fighting, destruction, and sabotage that drain the resources of peoples and claim the lives of the innocent.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif reminds brothers and sisters of the closeness of religion and the ties of Arab and historic fraternity that unite them, in obedience to the command of Allah the Almighty: “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers.” (Surah Al-Imran, Verse 103). It also recalls the Prophet’s saying (peace be upon him): “When two Muslims meet with their swords, both the killer and the killed are in the Fire…” He warns that division and discord are the main causes of the nation’s weakness, the violation of its sanctities, the collapse of nations upon it, and the squandering of its achievements and wealth. This comes at a time when the nation most urgently needs unity of ranks, consensus, and the protection of innocent blood, as well as investing in its resources and the endowments and wealth bestowed upon it by God, rather than squandering them on wars and conflicts.
In activation of this fraternal appeal, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif calls for the immediate formation of a mediation and de-escalation committee comprising representatives from various Arab and Islamic countries, consisting of wise and sincere individuals who are proponents of goodness, peace, and stability. This is in accordance with the Almighty’s saying: “And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, Verse 9). This committee shall be tasked with taking immediate action to defuse crises and active conflicts, bridge differences, and resolve existing disputes among members of the same religion and nation, thereby preserving the strength and sovereignty of Arabs, and safeguarding the lives of their children, the resources of their peoples, and the prospects of future generations.
Al-Azhar Al-Sharif is fully prepared to exert its utmost efforts to support the work of this blessed committee, with full confidence in the wisdom of all parties and their ability to overcome differences and turn the page on the past, to spare innocent blood, protect the lives of the innocent, and prioritize the public interest. He prays to God Almighty to protect our Arab and Islamic nation from all harm and evil, and to spare our region from the calamities of war and conflict. Indeed, He is the Guardian of such matters and All-Powerful.
