Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has requested the arrest of Hezbollah officials in connection with the truck bomb case, according to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar on Saturday.
The newspaper reported in its Saturday edition that President Aoun had asked the military intelligence agency to expand its investigation into the truck bomb case. It added that the Distinguished Prosecutor General, Rami Hajj, subsequently issued judicial orders to security agencies to detain Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Committee head, Hussein Abdullah, and his deputy, Ali Ayoub, on the grounds that they were aware of the truck bomb and were responsible for it, with the aim of identifying all other officials involved.
The newspaper stated that the state is pursuing a path of internal confrontation and provocation. Hezbollah, which announced through MP Hassan Fadelallah its refusal to relinquish the explosives, has shifted the dispute from the level of security and judicial handling to direct confrontation with the authorities.
The newspaper revealed that Hezbollah is no longer responding to internal pressures using the logic that governed its previous positions, and that the accumulation of confrontations, coupled with ongoing Israeli attacks and the absence of a clear horizon for a settlement, may lead it to recalculate the boundaries of internal clashes.
It noted that Aoun has sought to push the American side to pressure Israel, according to palace leaks. However, the trajectory of American demands does not yet suggest that this direction is a priority for Washington.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed last Monday that there would be no leniency or compromise regarding the investigation into the seizure of more than half a ton of TNT and C-4 explosives.
Previously, the Government Commissioner at the Military Court, Lebanese Judge Claude Ghanem, heard two detainees in the explosives case, with the seized materials placed in the custody of the Lebanese Military Police.
