Moscow has affirmed that unconditional renunciation of nuclear weapons requires progress on the disarmament track, which also entails eliminating fundamental contradictions capable of drawing nuclear-armed states into military confrontation.

Oleg Postnikov, director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a speech delivered yesterday in New York: “We consider calls for a short path to nuclear zero, which advocate the immediate and unconditional renunciation of nuclear weapons and their arbitrary declaration illegal, to be unrealistic and unproductive.”

The Russian diplomat added: “Attempts to artificially set timelines for disarmament that are unachievable are equally problematic, especially given the current highly volatile and unpredictable international situation.”

Postnikov regarded ideas calling for the immediate and unconditional renunciation of nuclear weapons as “unproductive and detached from reality,” and stated that progress on the disarmament track is impossible without eliminating fundamental contradictions capable of drawing nuclear states into direct military confrontation.

He pointed out that “the main obstacle to reducing arsenals lies in the Western approach aimed at achieving absolute military superiority.”

The diplomat listed among destabilizing factors NATO’s “joint nuclear missions” in Europe, the extension of the so-called US “extended deterrence” to the Asia-Pacific region, the possibility of establishing a trilateral nuclear alliance comprising the United States, South Korea, and Japan, the expansion of the global missile defense system to align with first-strike disarmament missions, the deployment of US medium- and short-range missiles, as well as Washington’s plans to deploy weapons in space.

The Russian diplomat emphasized that Russia remains open to seeking compromise solutions to stabilize the strategic situation, but only on the condition that favorable circumstances are created for equal dialogue and mutual respect for the core security interests of all parties.
