Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met on Saturday with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the 52nd meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that the meeting discussed recent developments in the regional situation, adding that Abdelatty emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and quickly restore calm and stability in the region.

The two ministers discussed ways to reach an agreement that would help contain the current crisis and prevent the conflict from widening, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

It added that Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of ensuring freedom of international navigation and the regular flow of trade through maritime routes, which would help mitigate the negative repercussions of the crisis on the global economy, particularly given the significant disruptions it has caused in energy and fertilizer supply chains and international trade.

Abdelatty also stressed the importance of respecting the security and stability of the Gulf states and all countries in the region, as well as the need to halt all hostile acts targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to condemn those unjustified attacks.
