Chinese company Deep Robotics, specializing in the development and manufacturing of intelligent robots, tested humanoid DR02 robots on the streets of Hangzhou to help regulate traffic, raise road users’ awareness, and guide tourists, as part of efforts to deploy robotics in public services and enhance traffic safety.
According to the technology and engineering news site Interesting Engineering, the field tests were conducted in early October in the West Lake area and the Chishan National Wetland Park, where the robots assisted in directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, particularly during periods of congestion and rain.
The site explained that the robots can alert cyclists to crossing stop lines and remind them to wear helmets, as well as announce traffic light changes, using audio alerts and gestures, without issuing tickets or imposing fines.
Standing approximately 175 centimeters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, the robots are dust- and water-resistant and can operate in various weather conditions. Cameras and sensors enable them to detect people, vehicles, and surrounding obstacles.
The robots’ duties extend beyond traffic management; they can also help tourists reach their destinations, answer basic inquiries in multiple languages, and manage visitor flow at crowded tourist sites.
These trials are part of the broader expansion of robotics in urban services, with field tests allowing an assessment of their ability to handle different situations and interact safely and effectively with humans.
