(KUNA) — From the fragrance of flowers to the language of melody, the French Agamemnon Orchestra evoked the connection between scent and music at the “Perfumes” concert held on Tuesday at the Drama Theatre in the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre. The event blended poetry with aromatic fragrances.
In his opening remarks, Mohammed bin Rida, Director of External Cultural Relations at the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, stated that the concert, organized by the Council’s General Secretariat in cooperation with the French Embassy in Kuwait, marks the inaugural cultural and artistic activities under the international cooperation project for cultural exchange, included in the development plan for the fiscal year 2026/2027. This project aims to strengthen international cultural partnerships, exchange expertise and creative experiences, and host high-quality events that enrich Kuwait’s cultural landscape.
He added that the Council seeks, through this project, to broaden cooperation with global cultural and artistic institutions and offer innovative creative experiences to the public, thereby enhancing Kuwait’s status as a crossroads of cultures and a platform for intercultural dialogue and human creativity.
Bin Rida clarified that the “Perfumes” evening, presented by the French Baroque orchestra Agamemnon, blends Baroque musical masterpieces with aromatic creativity in a sensory experience that engages both hearing and smell. Each musical piece is accompanied by a specific fragrance composition, creating an artistic dialogue between melodies and scents that touches the emotions and enriches the imagination.
He emphasized that Kuwaiti-French relations, spanning 65 years, represent a model of friendship and cooperation based on mutual respect and shared interests. He noted the role of culture, arts, and heritage in strengthening communication and understanding between the two friendly peoples, expressing hope for more joint initiatives and programs that reflect the depth of these relations.
For his part, French Ambassador to Kuwait Olivier Goffan, in his speech, said that the “Perfumes” evening celebrates the meeting of European musical heritage with the ancient traditions of perfumery in the Arabian Peninsula, in harmony with Kuwait’s open heritage and its history of maritime trade and cultural exchange.
Goffan added that perfume in Kuwait is an integral part of life, hospitality, memory, and national identity, evident in the Souq Al-Mubarakiya, the scent of incense, and the diwaniyas. He noted that presenting this performance in Kuwait carries special significance due to the deep connection between perfumes and Kuwaiti culture and its traditions of welcoming guests.
He explained that the performance combines the senses of hearing and smell in an artistic dialogue where music and fragrances harmonize, highlighting that the French Agamemnon Orchestra takes the audience on a journey through Renaissance and Baroque music as part of its project aimed at rediscovering ancient music and infusing it with new life through contemporary forms of artistic expression.
The concert featured musical works from the 17th century, drawing inspiration from the relationship between music and scents. Flowers and perfumes served as sources of inspiration for composers in the Renaissance and Baroque eras to express their fragrance through melodies.
The Agamemnon Orchestra was founded by a group of young musicians passionate about vocal Baroque and Italian music. Its performances are distinguished by an innovative vision of sound and stage arts, seeking to bring audiences closer to music and its historical context.
