Local officials and Georgia state authorities said that two people were killed and about 36 others were injured, some in critical condition, in a shooting during a party in one of the state’s neighborhoods.
Craig Beavy, chief of the DeKalb County Police Department, said at a press conference that two men, aged 21 and 23, were shot dead in Vienna, Georgia, approximately 216 kilometers south of Atlanta.
Officials told journalists that 35 people were injured, most of them with gunshot wounds.
They added that hundreds of people attended the event, which was held to mark the end of the back-to-school week for high schools in DeKalb County.
Authorities do not believe the threat to the public remains, but they have not publicly disclosed the names of any suspects or individuals connected to the incident, nor have they identified a motive for the shooting.
Chris Hosse, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said, “We do not want to speculate on what caused the incident.”
Officials noted that the ages of the injured ranged from 14 to 51 years old.
