Trial of Chinese Influencer Abby Choi's Murderers in Hong Kong - Sarmad

Hong Kong courts are examining the gruesome details of the crime during the trial of influencer Abi Choi’s killers. Prosecutors revealed that a dispute over a luxury apartment was the true motive behind the victim’s fate.

The Hong Kong High Court is hearing the details of the trial of Kwong Ka-wa, his son Alex, and his brother Anthony, who have pleaded not guilty to the murder charge of influencer and model Abi Choi.

The prosecution stated that the motive for this horrific crime was a bitter financial dispute over the sale of a luxury apartment.

Charlotte Drycott, Senior Counsel for the prosecution, explained that the victim owned an apartment in the Cadogan residential complex valued at HK$72 million. She had purchased it in 2019 for HK$60 million and registered it under the name of her former husband’s father, Kwong Ka-wa, to avoid stamp duty. However, her decision to sell the property angered Kwong Ka-wa, prompting him to devise a plan to eliminate her and retain the apartment.

Despite the wealth of the victim’s family and her new partner, the former husband’s family was experiencing financial difficulties. Voice messages heard by the court revealed the extent of Choi’s resentment toward her former husband’s relatives, whom she described as fraudsters. She emphasized that she had spent enormous sums on the apartment for her children, characterizing their behavior as ungrateful and unappreciative.

The conflict indeed peaked in February 2023, when the prosecution alleged that Kwong Ka-wa enlisted his sons to carry out the murder plot. Choi was lured to a rented apartment in Tai Po, which had been converted into a makeshift slaughterhouse. Police found a meat slicer and an electric saw at the scene. The victim’s skull was discovered boiling in a pot containing carrot soup, and her legs were found in a refrigerator within the property.

Police evidence indicated that the perpetrators covered the apartment walls with tarps and wore raincoats and face masks to avoid being splattered with blood while dismembering the body, amid suspicions that other parts of the body had been disposed of elsewhere. The trial, expected to last eight weeks, continues to shock the community in Asia’s financial hub.
