German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warns that reduced support for Ukraine would lead to serious consequences for European security and imposed peace

(KUNA) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned on Thursday of declining support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, saying it would have dangerous repercussions for security in Europe.

Merz added during the ceremony awarding the Peace of Westphalia Prize to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the city of Münster that “undermining Germany’s and Europe’s position means also undermining security in Ukraine.”

He pointed out that the absence of German support for Kyiv could lead to the end of the war in the form of a “forced peace” imposed on Ukraine, while warning of consequences that could include increased mass migration toward the West and destabilization of the Ukrainian state.

In this context, Merz affirmed that Berlin would not back down from supporting Ukraine, despite the escalation of what he described as hybrid attacks, citing a drone attack attempt on Leipzig Airport in early August last year.

Germany is currently the largest supporter of Ukraine in both financial and military terms, but the massive aid faces growing opposition within the country.
