"Independent War Command"... Pentagon Establishes New Unit for Autonomous Weapons - Sarmad

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday the creation of a new military command dedicated to building and providing autonomous and unmanned capabilities across the US Army.
Speaking to hundreds of military personnel in Quantico, Virginia, Hegseth said the new command would be named the Autonomous Warfare Command, a move that reflects the rapidly changing nature of warfare and the need to develop systems such as drones and leverage artificial intelligence.
The establishment of a new military command is unusual; the last such command was created in 2019, namely the US Space Command.
The step reflects the Pentagon’s efforts to transition from high-cost traditional weapon platforms to lower-cost autonomous systems that rely on artificial intelligence, after these systems have proven their pivotal role in recent conflicts.
Hegseth announced that the new command would be led by a four-star general.
