Hungarian Prime Minister Accused of Stealing a Mobile Phone... Parliament Lifts Immunity - Sarmad

The Hungarian parliament lifted the immunity of Prime Minister Peter Magyar on Monday, following allegations that he stole a mobile phone.

The parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s request to lift Magyar’s immunity. The measure was supported by 139 deputies, with no votes against or abstentions. Magyar, who also holds a seat in parliament, had himself requested the lifting of his immunity, affirming his willingness to cooperate with the investigation to clear his name of what he described as a character assassination. He dismissed the case as a farce and accused his political opponents of attempting to target him politically.

The incident dates back to 2024, when prosecutors accused Magyar of snatching a mobile phone from a man who was filming him inside a nightclub, before throwing the phone into the Danube River.

At the time, Magyar was a member of the European Parliament, which refused to lift his immunity. He later resigned from that position and became a deputy in the Hungarian parliament after his party, Tisza, secured a landslide victory in the legislative elections held in April 2026.

Earlier, the elected Hungarian Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he entered Hungarian territory, based on an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court.
