Erdogan calls for abolition of the veto in the UN Security Council - Sarmad

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the abolition of the veto power in the United Nations Security Council, stating that the current system no longer aligns with the realities of the modern world.

In an op-ed for Bloomberg titled “The UN Must Abolish the Veto in the Security Council,” Erdogan argued that “abolishing the veto must be the starting point and the primary strategic objective of any meaningful reform.”

He added, “It is clear that lasting peace in today’s world cannot be achieved through the proliferation of disconnected blocs that do not communicate with one another.”

He further stated, “The tragedies of recent years, including pandemics, energy crises, supply chain disruptions, and regional conflicts, have demonstrated that delegating the resolution of global crises to a limited number of capitals no longer aligns with contemporary reality.”

Erdogan continued, “It is now imperative to translate the need for reform into a concrete roadmap. Abolishing the privilege of the veto power must lie at the heart of this roadmap.”

He noted that “the UN Security Council still reflects the structure of international relations that prevailed after World War II.”

Erdogan argued that merely increasing the number of permanent members would not solve the problem of power concentration, but would instead increase the privileges of the existing system.

The Turkish President proposed abolishing permanent membership in the Security Council, emphasizing the necessity of electing all its members by the General Assembly for fixed terms, and that countries seeking to rejoin the Council should gain support from a majority of member states through elections.
