Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs inaugurates the “Be Aware” campaign to prevent drug risks at Kuwait University - Sarmad
(KUNA) – Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Sulaiman Al-Suwailim, today Monday, inaugurated the national awareness campaign “Be Aware,” aimed at enhancing awareness and preventing the dangers of drugs. The campaign is organized by the ministry, represented by the Rehabilitation and Evaluation Department at the College of Life Sciences, Kuwait University.
Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Dr. Al-Suwailim stated that the campaign stems from the importance of fostering shared responsibility in protecting youth and society from this scourge and the dangers of drugs and psychoactive substances. He noted that awareness extends beyond merely knowing the risks of drugs; it also involves building the capacity to make sound decisions and rejecting behaviors that threaten the individual, the family, and society.
He added that confronting drug abuse is a shared responsibility requiring the integrated efforts of families, educational, religious, health, and social institutions. He emphasized that the ministry plays its role in awareness and guidance through programs and initiatives aimed at strengthening values and community awareness, as well as implementing rehabilitation programs within correctional institutions and youth care centers.
He clarified that the campaign is based on pillars of awareness, prevention, and treatment, aiming to raise young people’s awareness of drug risks and enhance their ability to cope with pressures and dangerous behaviors. It also underscores the importance of treatment and rehabilitation, supporting recovery efforts and reintegration into society.
Dr. Al-Suwailim pointed out that this campaign is part of a series of events, discussion panels, and awareness lectures held at several colleges of Kuwait University, helping to reach the widest possible student audience with the campaign’s messages.
He noted that the event featured an accompanying awareness exhibition with participation from several supporting entities and institutions, including the General Directorate for Combating Drug Abuse and the “Giras” Association.
The event included an awareness session for students, featuring Dr. Hussein Al-Shatti, Director of the Addiction Treatment Center, and Professor Adel Al-Mutairi, who discussed the risks of addiction and preventive measures, alongside the legal and awareness aspects related to drug dangers.
The event also saw the honoring of Dr. Salem Al-Shammari, Representative of the Kuwait University President and Acting Dean of Student Affairs, along with several supporting entities, in recognition of their efforts and contributions to the campaign’s success. (End) A.Z./N.W.F
