Syria: Republican Guard officer under Assad regime arrested - Sarmad

Syria’s Internal Security Forces announced on Saturday the arrest of former Major General Ahmad Muhammad Ismail, whom they described as a top-tier leader in the Republican Guard during the rule of former President Bashar al-Assad.

According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, the Internal Security Forces stated that Ismail held various military positions before assuming command of the 101st Airborne Battalion’s operations in early 2016.

They added that Ismail participated in leading military operations in Aleppo, Daraa, and Eastern Ghouta, before later serving as Chief of Staff of the Republican Guard for six months, then as Deputy Commander of the 14th Division, specialized in airborne operations, ultimately rising to command the division. These details and allegations are based on the Syrian authorities’ account and could not be independently verified.

The authorities said that investigations into Ismail are ongoing in preparation for completing the legal and judicial procedures against him.
