European fears of Russian escalation following the Russian parliamentary elections

European governments are bracing for a potential escalation by Russian President Vladimir Putin following the Russian parliamentary elections, as Western intelligence officials warn that Moscow is laying the groundwork for a new troop mobilization and may intensify its attacks against NATO member states. This comes amid Western assessments that Moscow is preparing for a possible new military mobilization after the elections.

The Telegraph, citing Western intelligence sources, reported that Russian authorities are making administrative preparations that could allow for additional mobilization if a political decision is made, following the conclusion of the three-day parliamentary voting process, which ends on Sunday. This follows earlier comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding intelligence estimates suggesting the potential call-up of approximately 300,000 additional soldiers.

The Russian elections began on Friday and will continue until Sunday.

However, Western intelligence officials have cast doubt on the likelihood of a large-scale mass mobilization, citing its political cost and the difficulty of equipping large numbers of conscripts. One source described current activities as a “covert mobilization,” alongside intensified efforts to recruit contract soldiers.

European officials fear that Russian pressure could extend to NATO countries through sabotage, cyberattacks, and other actions characteristic of hybrid warfare. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the Russian threat to Europe and France has “escalated in recent weeks.”

These concerns coincide with reports that the U.S. Department of Defense is considering reducing the U.S. military presence in Europe by withdrawing between 25,000 and 40,000 troops, along with aircraft, ships, and military equipment—reports that Washington has denied.

These worries arise as European governments report an increase in hybrid operations linked to Russia, including allegations of sabotage and cyberattacks targeting countries supporting Ukraine.

However, Putin has dismissed speculation about troop mobilization after the elections as “nonsense.”
